Sitting in St. John's in a McDonalds for a quick catch up. We are still having trouble finding internet and power at the same time and no outlets here so I'll go as far as I can.
We spent some time on the Bonavista Peninsula about in the middle of the province. As we go further south the scenery is less dramatic. Bonavista is a more prosperous small town with a long fishing history.

Bonavista Lighthouse The tower is inside the keepers home.

This beautiful lighthouse still has the old mechanism inside. Every 2 hours the keeper would crank up the counterweight and as it slowly dropped the light would rotate. The mechanism of gears and pulleys is beautiful compared to the new tower with a small but powerful automated light. In so many older structures I am awed by the beauty. There is that quote about not having anything that is not beautiful or useful and pre-industrial revolution people made the useful beautiful too.
We also visited the town of Elliston Root cellar capital of the world. Well, they do have a lot of them and some have been used for generations. Residents grow potatoes, cabbage, parsnip, turnips and other cold weather crops and store them for the winter in these cellars. Elliston is also known for the Puffins that nest nearby. Cutest birds ever!
