Beautiful Newfoundland

We are sitting in a cafe in the beautiful little town of Trinity.  A chance to catch up and post.  The news from Colorado is so horrifying and sad.  There has been quite a bit of coverage CBC radio so we are mostly up to date.  Our thoughts are with all those involved.
We have been in a more peaceful place here in Canada.  We spent the last few days on the island of Fogo.  It was a 40 minute ferry ride to this small island.  The island life is quiet.  Mainly a fishing  economy with a little tourism.  The local residents were faced with the choice to move off the island, languish or come up with a plan.  They came up with a plan, first ship building then fish processing.  The island community has remained.  Most of Newfoundland has a problem keeping young people, it is so hard to make a living.  Everything is very expensive because it has to be shipped in on the ferry and for some people it is just well, boring.  Some islanders love it however and are happy to live so far from a coffee shop or mall.

In Newfoundland the trails have lots of steps and boardwalks.  If there is a marshy area they put a boardwalk over it.  If it is steep instead of switchbacks they put in a stairway.  Amazing! This is a hike up Fogo Head.
