Beer Diaries

Wisconsin is known for cheese, brats and of course, beer.  We had already tasted some of Great Dane's nice and creamy John Stone's  Stout and today Bill took us out to New Glarus home of Spotted Cow and other notable beers.  The new New Glarus brewery was opened in June 2009 and looks more like a winery with beautifully landscaped grounds and imposing entryway.

They do a tasting and "behind the scenes"  tour but these are sold out well in advance so we did the self guided tour instead.  Beautiful modern facility!

Beer samples in one of the labs.
 Copper brewing kettles.
 Huge fermenting tanks.
 Bottling room
Beautiful 30 liter pilot brewing system.
I think that their beer is only sold in WI, so if you get a chance to stop in it is worth it.  The tasting room upstairs offers their main beers but you can purchase some of their smaller runs in the store downstairs.  We had enjoyed Spotted Cow Ale, Fat Squirrel Nut Brown Ale and Moon Man, a 5 hop blend with a malty finish through the week and bought some Cherry Stout and Apple Ale to try later.
The town of New Glarus is quaint and quiet except for festivals like todays Polka Festival.  I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a good polka band, like maybe never.  But the band was good the dancers energetic and the beer cold!  I think I like Wisconsin!

Dave Austin Band plays polka favorites.
 New Glarus beers on tap.
Early crowds line up for beer, brats and the biggest pretzels I have ever seen.  I ate mine before I thought of taking a picture.
