The people in Canada that we have met so far have been so friendly to us. At times we have been a bit reserved because we are not used to this openness in the US. We tend to be more suspicious of people's motives but it appears that people here are just nice! Not only the campers who invited us to join their party but the man at the hardware store in Cheticamp who drew us maps of some of the back roads he wanted us to take to see the best views, the couple from NS who listed all their favorite places in NL and every salesperson in the stores who seemed happy to help us as we were struggling to swipe our credit card.
Speaking of credit cards it seems that our new cards from 1st Bank are old technology. Credit cards here have the chip and PIN system as in the UK. Our magnetic strip seem to startle people here. It is still useable but very old school. I did read that changing systems is very expensive so we may have the magnetic strip cards for a while.
I know I mentioned it in an earlier post but it has also been wonderful to be in a place that has such a musical culture. On Cape Breton everyone seemed to be able to sing, dance or play an instrument, often all three. Canadiens are very proud of their artists and appreciate good music from other countries too. They are knowledgeable and enjoy talking about music too.
When we packed we tried not to take too much and most of our choices were good. We weren't as prepared for the very hot weather we had and ran out of clean clothes quickly. We packed the filter pitcher for water but haven't used it to filter or store water in the refrigerator, but have used it to fill the water tank. I love the hand crank blender but fruit has been so expensive that we have not made as many smoothies as I planned. We did find a stove top toaster in an LL Bean store that is great. It works really well and folds flat for storage. We have plenty to read since we stopped at a Library book sale in Maine and bought a bag of books for $3. I thought I would keep food in plastic containers but so far most of them are empty. They may get donated at the next thrift store. Our best pre trip purchase is the bike rack Bruce found at the second hand sports store in EV. It swings away so that we can get into the camper without having to take the bikes off each time. Much easier!
Cooking has been my biggest challenge. I miss my oven, bread machine and microwave. I am having a hard time coming up with meals that take little prep, not much cook time and no oven. Any suggestions?
White trucks and campers attract millions bugs and are way more visible than on a vehicle of another color.
We are lucky to live in a state that has good grocery stores and no mosquitos!
